INAUGURAL MINUTES

Minutes of the Inaugural Meeting of
Southwick History and Preservation Society
held in what was 'Southwick U. D. C. Offices' building at 217 Southwick Road, Southwick, Sunderland.
6.15 - 8pm on Friday 4th October 2002

Present

Pamela Tate in the Chair
37 members of the public.

Pamela Tate opened the Meeting by thanking all present for their interest in forming a heritage society for Southwick. The meeting was in response to the many requests received during the |Southwick Heritage walk held on Saturday 14th September which was supported by 84 people.

Continuing she then outlined some proposed activities for the envisaged society. Pamela conveyed that there were two matters of some urgency which made the formation of a society imperative. One being the fate of Holy Trinity Rectory and the more pressing matter of the development planned on the site of the Savoy bingo hall on the Green. Pamela explained that she had a basic constitution prepared and if this could be agreed to be adopted by those present then the then formed Society could start immediate action with regard to the issues already mentioned.(Copies of the Draft Constitution had been distributed among the group.) At this point there was a consensus of opinion that the society should be formed.

Pamela then went on to read Clause by Clause, a proposed basic Constitution (A copy of which is attached). Such items as Annual Subscriptions were set, Finance and Meetings were explained as the draft was examined. At Clause 10 she vacated the Chair to Robert Moon who having no vested interest was asked to conduct the election of the Officers and Committee. After briefly setting some guidelines re the responsibilities of the various posts, he proceeded to accept nominations and the following persons were elected.

On completion of the elections he then turned the Chair to the newly elected Chairperson, Pamela Tate. Pamela proceeded to outline the remaining 14 Clauses of the proposed constitution. There being no dissent, this constitution was adopted with the built in proviso that amendments could be made at the first Annual General Meeting to be held in April 2003. The Constitution was duly signed by all present.

Pamela then went on to outline the dangers facing the Rectory. She hoped that we may be able to get a plaque regarding the 'Lewis Carroll' (Charles Dodgson) connection, as featured in a recent Echo article. More urgently needing attention was the Savoy and Pamela explained that she had seen outlined planning proposals at the Civic Centre that morning. These showed the demolition of the Savoy site and the erection of a large car park fronting onto The Green with a Bingo Hall complex behind it.

After some lively discussion it was decided to launch an immediate petition and campaign with the first signatures being obtained at the meeting to be sent to the Sunderland Planning Department.

Pamela then talked briefly on various group interests and activities which could be instigated. She then thanked everyone for their attendance and support. The meeting closed at 7.55pm.

Signed as a true and correct record of the meeting of the Society held 4th October 2002.
