April 24th 2007 Saturday 1.30pm. Our Annual General Meeting, followed at approximately 2pm by an update on the Photographic Census Project, by James Bryce, and then the SHAPS Family History Project by Pamela Tate. Raffle and refreshments available. Non member admission £1, pay at door. Venue - Father Smythe Room, St Hilda's Church, Beaumont Street, Southwick.

May 5th 2007 Saturday 10am  ‘Mystery Trip’ leaving from The Green - back approx. 3pm. Cost £5 and booking is essential. Tel. 0191 5672438.

 

May 12th 2007 Saturday 9am - 4pm  County Hall Durham ‘Yesterday Belongs To You.’ SHAPS Stall at this biennial event for local and family historians. Lots to see and buy. Free entry.

            

June 2nd  2007 Saturday 10.30am. ‘Perambulation of former Southwick U.D.C Boundary.’ A guided 3 to 4 hour walk. Meeting at Wearmouth Colliery Welfare ground on Thompson Road. Car parking is provided. Come prepared for walking. (Drink and snack). Phone 0191 5672438 for more details. Event is free and booking is essential.

 

June 9th 2007 Saturday 3pm – 4.30 pm. at Southwick Community Centre. ‘Sunderland of Years Ago.’ Amazing photos from the William Waples Collection being shown for the first time in Southwick. He moved to Sunderland in 1908 and worked for Binns. This is an event to help SHAPS Committee raise funds to help the repair of the Wearmouth Colliery War Memorial presently sited at the Wearmouth Colliery Welfare Ground. Raffle & refreshments available. All donations welcome – tell your friends.

 

June 30th 2007 Saturday 12noon - 4pm at Hylton Castle. ‘Local Heritage Expo’ Marquee hosting various local heritage groups, stalls, performances, family activities, entertainment. SHAPS will be there. Please support us.

 

July 7th  2007 Saturday 2 pm. At High Southwick Methodist Church on Thompson Road. ‘Writing Local History.’ Carol Roberton former Echo journalist and local historian. Her selection of photographs will be followed by ‘Question Time’.    Raffle & refreshments available. Non members £1

 

September 8th 2007 Saturday 10am - 4.30pm Gateshead Stadium. ‘National Family History Fair’ SHAPS stand at a very popular event which has exhibitors from across the U.K. selling a variety of items, Entry fee applies.

 

October 13th 2007 Saturday 2pm at High Southwick Methodist Church on Thompson Road. ‘The Twin Resorts of Roker & Seaburn’ presented by Phil Curtis. Raffle and refreshments available. Non members £1

 

November 24th 2007 Saturday 2pm at St Andrew’s Church Old Mill Road ‘Characters of Sunderland.’ A pre Xmas social and quiz with guest speaker Norman Kirtlan. Raffle & refreshments available. Non members £1.

 

February 23rd 2008 Saturday 2pm at Holy Trinity Parish Church. Guest speaker Colin Orr back by popular demand, speaking about ‘Games and Sweets of Yester Year’ Refreshments available. Non members £1.

 

March 29th 2008 Saturday 2pm. ‘Shipbuilding in Our Area.’ Maurice Clyde from the Doxford Group will show items from their collection. Father Smythe Room St Hilda’s, Beaumont Street. Raffle and refreshments available. Non members £1.

September 9th 2006 Saturday 10am to 4.30pm. National Family History Fair. Venue - Gateshead International Stadium, off Felling By pass. Gateshead. SHAPS will have a stand at this event.

September 10th 2006 Sunday 1pm to 3pm. "Graveyard Talk", as part of Heritage Open Days. A Photographic display alongside a discussion about notables of Southwick. Raffle and refreshments available. Venue: Holy Trinity Church, Church Bank, Southwick.

September 30th 2006 Saturday 2pm. "Sunderland's Glorious Glass", presented by Sunderland Museum's glass specialist, Alex Thirlaway. Raffle and refreshments available. Non member admission £1, pay at door.  Venue - High Southwick Methodist Church Hall, Thompson Road, Southwick.

November 25th 2006 Saturday 2pm. Our "Pre Christmas Social", with guest speaker Colin Orr to wash away those festive blues. A "History Matters" supported event. Raffle and refreshments available. Non member admission £1, pay at door. Venue: St Andrew's Methodist Church, Old Mill Road, Southwick.

February 10th 2007 Saturday 2pm. Guest speaker, Stuart Miller, addresses "The Sanitary Question in Sunderland" (Relating to the Rawlinson Report of 1849). Non member admission £1, pay at door. Venue - Southwick Social Club, Church Bank, Southwick.

March 24th 2007 Saturday 2pm. "Son et Lumiere". The life history of the Parish Church. Raffle and refreshments. Non member admission £1, pay at door. Venue - Holy Trinity Church, Church Bank, Southwick.

February 25th 2006 Saturday 2pm. 'Southwick Pottery'. Shauna Gregg of Sunderland Museum Service will give expert information about this former local industry, which exported worldwide. Venue - High Southwick Methodist Church Hall, Thompson Road, Southwick.

March. 25th 2006    Saturday 1.30pm. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING followed at 2pm by Part 2 of Alf Davison's experiences as a Policeman in Southwick.  Venue - The Ross Room, Holy Trinity Church, Church Bank, Southwick.

April 3rd to 8th, 2006 "A Photographic Census of Southwick" - A public display of photographs taken during the SHAPS project will be held in the foyer of Sunderland City Library, Fawcett Street, Sunderland during normal library opening hours.

May 6th 2006 Saturday 11 am to 3pm. "A Photographic Census of Southwick". A public display of photographs and other materials from our project will be on view. In addition, two bus tours of Southwick will depart from the venue at 11am and 1pm. FREE admission to venue and bus tours. Venue: Southwick Community Centre, Southwick Road (opposite the Sun Inn Public house), Southwick.

May 31st 2006 Wednesday 7pm. 'Evening Walk around Southwick'. Assemble at the front entrance of the Kwiksave Store, The Green, Southwick (parking in the store car park at the rear).

June 11th 2006 Sunday 10.30am. 'A Visit to the old Doxfords shipyard site'. A guided tour of the site will take place - booking essential .

May 31st Tues. 7.30pm 'Heritage Groups Challenge' at Fulwell Community Centre, Chapman Street. Support needed for the SHAPS team and check out your own knowledge. Refreshments and raffle available but remember to bring your sense of humour.
June 4th Sat. 1.30pm - approx 4pm 'Shipyard Sites' viewed from the comfort of the river Wear's cruise boat Brokaella Meet at the Marina, Roker. Booking essential £5. Tel 5672438. Refreshments and toilet on board.

MARCH 8th -- Sat. At 2pm. SING AS WE GO' - THE GRACEY FIELDS STORY. Presented by Robert Moon, As part of a social afternoon, with raffle, refreshments and a chance to reminisce. At the Function Room of The North Star Public House. The presentation is free, but there will be a small charge for light refreshments, if required.

APRIL 5th -- AGM MEETING and Election or Re-election of the society's officers Sat. 1.30pm At the Function Room of The North Star Public House. Following the AGM, there will be a FREE illustrated talk by Stuart Miller, on The Making of the River Wear. Stuart is a local historian and a Honorary SHAPS Member. There will be a small charge for light refreshments.
