Who are We?

Southwick History And Preservation Society (SHAPS) is an organisation committed to promoting and raising awareness to the positive aspects of Southwick on Wear. We are a non-political and non-religious Society. Chairperson Ms. Pamela Tate (click on my name to email me).

Where are We?

Southwick-on-Wear is a community which, since 1928, forms part of the City of Sunderland,

on the North bank of the River Wear, in the North East of England.

Our Aims and Objectives

To promote Southwick in a positive manner and be involved in influencing the decisions which are made about its future. To encourage the younger generations to be aware of their local area, and support the older generation to take an active role in preserving aspects of Southwick’s past and giving their views about its future.

How We Can Achieve Our Aim

. Provide advice and information regarding Family and Local History of the area.
. Provide a focal point for local opinions on issues regarding the development of Southwick’s future appearance, amenities and community cohesion.

. Raise awareness in the local community regarding proposals for redevelopment in the area.

. Engage in documenting recollections of Southwick’s past and present.

. Organise fundraising activities to allow us to fund our various aims.

. Initiate campaigns to highlight people’s views on issues of the area.

. Contribute to the local schools education programme regarding their local environment and history.

. Actively support the preservation and conservation of buildings of historic and cultural interest.

. Acquisition and preservation of local artefacts.

. Raise awareness locally of Southwick’s rich past via a variety of methods, e.g. talks, walks, slide-shows, photographic exhibitions, booklets, social events, outings, etc.

. Encourage a diverse membership, including people who can offer a range of knowledge interest, commitment and skills, to ensure the continuity of an active group.

.To create an interesting and educational web site to promote Southwick to a wider “audience”. - YOU HAVE ALREADY FOUND US!
